Urban water quality monitoring

Is it safe to bathe in beaches and rivers? The quality of bathing water

Urban water quality monitoring

Paris has significantly improved the water quality of the Seine River in recent years thanks to major economic efforts just before the inauguration of the Olympic Games. The investment made has included the construction of a 50,000 m3 reservoir to store rainwater and the improvement of the sewerage network to prevent the discharge of wastewater into the river.

The media around the world have focused on this problem, which has coincided with the greater coverage given in summer to the state of the water in rivers and beaches due to greater vacation use.

In the case of both rivers and beaches, the degradation of water quality is often due to heavy rains which cause microbiological contamination by Enterococcus and Escherichia coli (E.Coli) bacteria.

Adasa offers the market the aquaBio device for measuring both pathogens in real time.

Rainfall and wastewater in Spain

In Spain access to beaches may be temporarily limited due to episodes of water quality degradation caused by heavy rainfall. They overflow and wash away sewage, leading to a high presence of Enterococcus and E.Coli bacteria.

aquaBio and the importance of measuring microorganisms

Adasa has developed the aquaBio-B503 microbiological measurement analyzer that detects and quantifies in real time, quickly and automatically the main bacteria that indicate the microbiological quality of water.

In this way we complement the traditional methods that control microorganisms in the different uses of water: bathing, irrigation and drinking water.

Why is it important to detect, control and measure E.Coli and Enterococci?

They are bacteria that inhabit the human body on a regular basis. The problem arises when the quantity increases significantly. It is then when it can cause ailments such as diarrhea, urinary tract infections, gastroenteritis or otitis.

Advantages of using aquaBio

The main benefits obtained by the client when implementing aquaBio in his installation are the following:

  1. Saves energy and reagent consumption.
  2. Provides alerts in case of malfunctioning of the water reclamation plant.
  3. Improves the control of the disinfection system.
  4. Increases the efficiency of the reclaimed water production process, avoiding overdosing of disinfectant chemicals and excessive consumption of UV energy.
  5. Guarantees the production of reclaimed water suitable for each objective.
  6. Provides tools for better management during the bathing season: management of flags/information boards/websites of bathing areas.
  7. Provides daily information on microbiological contamination.
  8. Allows anticipation of beach opening during an episode of DSU pollution.
  9. Reduces economic losses by avoiding prolonged beach closures.
  10. Ensures the safety of bathers by avoiding public health and sanitary management problems.
  11. Provides transparency for public confidence.
  12. Minimises the impact on the local economy.
  13. Minimises risk to drinking water sources.

Acknowledgements

Adasa has obtained the Information Security Management System certification from Aenor, according to ISO/IEC 27001:2022.

This certification ensures that we have a robust Information Security Management System (ISMS), which protects the confidentiality, integrity and availability of data for our customers, partners and employees. The benefits of this certification include:

  1. Better protection against cyber threats, continuous improvement of our security processes.
  2. Ensuring confidentiality, integrity and availability of data.
  3. Detect, mitigate and proactively manage information security risks.
  4. Strengthen the confidence of our customers, partners and other stakeholders in our ability to protect information.

Next steps with security

The achievement of this milestone is a major step towards obtaining the National Security Scheme (ENS), as the next objective in the continuous improvement process that we have implemented in our organization.

This is a differential aspect in relation to the degree of excellence in the quality and security of the services we offer, which is not available to many companies in our sector.

It is an instrument that gives Adasa a better position in the market and direct access to new tenders.

A long commitment to certified quality

It is also important to highlight the fact that Adasa already has a total of 7 certifications:

  1. ISO9001
  2. ISO14001
  3. ISO45001
  4. ISO37001
  5. UNE19601
  6. EMAS
  7. ISO27001

The complexity of obtaining this last certification makes it necessary to highlight the effort and dedication of all the members involved.

It is a great achievement both for the company and for all of us who make up the Adasa team, since without commitment and collaboration, it would not be possible to continue advancing in the achievement of our objectives.
