DIGITAGUABUR: Digitisation of sanitation infraestructure
With an investment of over €20 million, DIGITAGUABURG forms part of Aguas de Burgos' 2025-2030 Digitalisation Master Plan and represents an example of the effective application of PERTE funds.
Challenge
The DIGITAGUABURG project is a pioneering initiative in the digitisation of the entire water cycle in the municipality of Burgos.
This project, financed by NextGenerationEU European Funds, is part of the PERTE (Strategic Project for Economic Recovery and Transformation) for the Digitisation of the Water Cycle and represents a key step towards more efficient, sustainable and resilient water resource management.
With an investment of over €20 million, DIGITAGUABURG is part of Aguas de Burgos' 2025-2030 Digitalisation Master Plan and is an example of the effective use of PERTE funds.
The main expected results include:
1. A 30% reduction in response times to pollution incidents.
2. Permanent monitoring of 23 overflow points in the combined sewerage networks.
The project is in line with Burgos' strategy to move towards smart water management, reduce losses, guarantee supply and adapt to climate change.
With this initiative, Burgos is taking a decisive step towards the comprehensive digitalisation of the water cycle, placing itself at the forefront of water management in Spain, combining operational efficiency and compliance with sustainable development goals (SDGs 6 and 9).
Adasa's Solution
At Adasa, we have installed an advanced sensor system, with instrumentation covering level, flow and water quality sensors, rain gauges and discharge control points.
The system deployed incorporates:
1. Multi-parameter sensors for continuous measurement of pH, conductivity and turbidity in sanitation networks.
2. Telemetry devices with level sensors located at critical overflow points.
3. Rain gauges to quantify rainfall and correlate it with urban runoff volumes.
Adasa has completed the following solutions:
- Installation and commissioning of quality monitoring equipment in the drinking water and sanitation network.
- Real-time monitoring of wastewater quality.
- Permanent monitoring of 23 overflow points in the combined sewerage networks.
- Monitoring of industrial discharges and reliefs.
- Deployment of advanced data acquisition infrastructure.
- Integration into the digital platform, SCADA and control centre of Aguas de Burgos.
The aim is to optimise operations and service management by enabling the visualisation, analysis and automatic generation of reports. This digital integration improves operational efficiency, promotes more transparent and proactive management, and strengthens the ability to respond to critical situations, consolidating Burgos as a benchmark in the digital transformation of the urban water cycle.
Result
The benefits obtained by those responsible for the facilities include:
- Greater quality control in sanitation, improving treatment at the WWTP.
- Improved control of discharges.
- Early warning of critical weather situations such as floods.
- Precise control of chlorination.
- Improved emergency plans.
